This is a surprise follow-up to the 10mm fantasy ogre Kickstarter feature I did a couple weeks ago about Black Gate Miniatures. After posting the article, the guys behind the project contacted me and offered to send me some sample miniatures. It was short before the end of the project, especially with UK > Canada shipping, but why not!
I got them last Friday, and rushed to clean and paint them before the project was done. As of this posting, there is still 36 hours left, so don’t take too long and go pledge.
The cast are really good. Minimal mold lines to file, and a single bit of flash on the armoured warrior. It’s small enough that it doesn’t even show in the pictures I took.
If you are wondering about scale, here are some shots I took, next to a GW Warmaster dwarf, a GW WFB Ogre (28mm scale) , and a penny.
For the painting, I went with an unified colour scheme, both to tie them all together, but also to save time as my free-time was sparse this weekend. I would probably have passed a bit more time on them in other circonstances, but considering they are for an army scale game, I think they came out pretty good. I’ll base them individually later to use them as objective or scenario markers if I don’t end up getting a playable army.
Overall, the sculpting and casting quality are really good, and the models are fun and fast to paint. If you are nostalgic of the Old World and want a real mass battle game that doesn’t look like a small skirmish, and like big burly bloodthirsty ogres, take a look at this project before it’s too late.
