Showcase – 28mm warplanes

Last year, I painted historical tanks for 3D Wargaming, a local 3d designer, to help promote his new line. This year, he launched a new Kickstarter project, but this time for warplanes, and I had once again the chance to paint some of his demo models.

I said planes, but it is really more of a mixe of different models that fly. Three planes, a giant rocket and a flying bomb. They have more rounded surfaces, which made them a bit harder to paint then the tanks, as the 3d layers are showing a bit more than on the flat panels of the threaded vehicles. I missed the heavy weathering that tanks required, compared to comparatively to the cleaner vehicles that planes are. Tiny Stuffed Unicorn with Impact Miniatures

You like my stuffed unicorn and want more in your life?  However, you would like smaller ones to create a real horde of them? Now you can!

Impact Miniatures now sells smaller version of the unicorn. The smaller one (dubbed the Tiny Unicorn from now on), has an height of 20mm, compared to the 32mm of its big brother. It is 3d printed on demand in a clear blue resin. The details are impressively sharp, and outside of some changes due to the scanning progress, it is pretty much spot on.

Showcase – Aquila and Legio XIII starter

I mostly put aside painting in the past months to concentrate on sculpting, but I got back to my brushes recently, and completed a couple models. The first of those I present now, Aquila for Arena Rex.

This is the last model to complete the Legio XIII faction starter, and with him done, I can now get to playing.  Next up, I will paint some terrain to fill out the arena. I do have a couple more models in the queue, but they are not to be painted any time soon. We’ll see if they rise to the top after getting the game to the table though.

CaptainCon 2018

Last weekend was CaptainCon 2018. It’s the first big con I was able to attend since GenCon in 2014. TempleCon (which I attended multiple times, and was my first convention ever) and CaptainCon ran parallel for some time, but the latter is now held at the same venue and time slot as the former, that is sadly now defunct. I felt almost right back at home; similar gaming setup, similar game selection, even some of the vendors had the same spot!

My goal with CaptainCon was simple; enjoy the road trip with the guys and the time away from the family, and play & test games I don’t get to the table often enough back home.

WMH Secret Santa 2017

Like last year, I took part in our provincial Warmachine & Hordes themed Secret Santa painting exchange. It always a fun community building activity. My target had provided a good selection of ideas to pick from, my favourite in the list being the Legion of Everblight Ice Witches. Sadly, when I wanted to start painting, they were not out yet.  My second choice in the list was still a good model, and most important, was out and available to pick at my FLGS!  So onward I went with a Beast Mistress, for the same faction.

I knew the target from his blog, so I went there and dig through the posts to find some sample of his paint scheme. He doesn’t post much pictures, and when he does, mostly overview in battle reports, so it was hard to find a good view. I luckily found one in one of the local FB group, so based my scheme on it.

The WIP Table of Shame

We all have (or almost all) a Shelf of Shame, with piles of unpainted models, waiting forever to be assembled or painted. I’m not unfamiliar to that situation. However, I also have what I coined as a WIP Table of Shame: a collection of mid-painting models that never got finished for whatever reasons, be that for weeks, or years…

The number of models on my own WIP Table of Shame is starting to get out of control, stealing work space,  and mostly sapping my painting mojo. This week, I made the decision to correct this situation.  I know myself however; I can’t hard quit what I’m working on right now to finish those, or stop getting into new projects and ideas. I thus decided that from now own, and until the situation is under better control, I will have to finish something on the WIP Table of Shame anytime I  want to tackle anything new. Hopefully, it will at least slow down the creep,  if not correct the problem entirely.

Showcase – T-34 and Tiger 1

My most recent project was the painting of two WW2 historical tanks, a russian T-34 and a german Tiger 1. Both vehicles are 3d printed models, designed by the 3D Wargaming team.

It was a first foray for me in the historical painting realm. It’s a style less flashy than what I’m used to: lower contrasts, no big edge highlights, neutral palettes, lots of weathering, etc. I went with colour schemes inspired from what I found in my research, but didn’t go for 100% accurate. It was a good challenge, and mostly, it created a craving to paint more in that style, while historical never really blipped on my radar before.

Throwback Thursday – First minis, ever!

Some time ago, while cleaning old boxes at my parents’ house, I stumbled upon the first box of minis I ever got, while still a young gaming Padawan. They were Ral Partha miniatures for RPGs, random stuff not even related to a campaign or specific project. I attacked the painting with much joy, and no research or knowledge whatsoever, using Testor enamel scale model paints.
