How-to – Frozen lake base

I’m working right now on a commision piece, Lylyth, Reckoning of Everblight by Privateer Press. The client wanted a thematic base representing a frozen lake breaking under the weight of her sleigh. I must confess to you all, it isn’t a genre of basing I had ever worked on previously. The is a huge base though, 120mm, which gives lots of space to create the effect.

By luck, I had seen earlier a similar base (without the broken ice though), which was made using water effect for the ice. I liked the idea, but I remembered that I still had plexiglas left from the window made for the Space Station Yaumato that could be used as ice too, and add the opportunity to have solid ice shards. I wanted to add some volume to the base, so I chose to represent a lake shore instead of only the frozen surface. After some brainstorming, I made a small 40mm test base and I had a plan to start the big one.

Showcase – Mandragora

I recently made an unboxing of what I got in the latest Endless: Fantasy Tactics  Kickstarter by On The Lamb Games. In that post, I said that I wanted to paint the Mandragora as soon as possible,  because of my love of the model.

Well, it’s now done, and what a cool model it was to paint!  I’m now wondering if I shouldn’t order a couple more of it to try out different colour schemes, with all the fun I had painting it. 🙂

Northern Defenders Painting Contest 2015

Two weeks ago was held the Northern Defenders Painting Contest (now known as the Northern Defenders Show), probably the biggest miniature painting contest in Eastern Canada, or at least on the way there. For the first time, the event used an Open format, in which each painter presents a display of their best work, instead of entering single pieces in various categories. (You can find more information about the Open format on their new website.)

The “Donate or Paint” challenge

I’ve been called out by Yaum to partake in the Donate or Paint challenge. It’s a social campaign started by the Chain Attack podcast crew for one of  their local player, Marc Harrison. He has been suffering from server health issues for the past three years, with all the financial and personal impacts a tragic event like that can have. He’s a passionnate painter, and can’t even paint anymore. They lauched the challenge to help him out, either by donating and/or painting model as moral support for Marc. You can find all the info about the challenge there:
http://www.chain-attack.com/donate-or-paint/

I chose to paint a Winter Troll I had already assembled, and painted in the 3 days the challenge required. I just uploaded a quick video on Youtube that explains the concept, where I also share the paintjob and nominate 3 new challenges. If you don’t want to suffer through my bad accent and my face, just scroll down a bit, I’ve posted a picture of the miniature and my nominations right after the video.

Showcase – Baron Celcius Von Fahrenheit

My most recent painting project was bit out of left field; for the first time, I painted a miniature representation of someone I knew in the flesh.  The model in question is that of Baron Celcius Von Fahrenheit, from RAFM Miniatures. That miniature was created after a steampunk cosplay contest, where the winner got is personna transformed in a 28mm scale version of itself.

The friend in question is the steampunk cosplayer Alexandre Adam, who is behind the character of Baron Celcius Von Fahrenheit. He is also the guy behind the Youtube channel Kinetoscope Parlour, where he meets “strange and wonderful people”, coming from the steampunk subculture or other completely different way of being strange.
